I recently saw an amazing video about this great little drum on Youtube (of course). Anyone out there play the Kanjira? I would love to know more about them, their role in Indian Classical music, your thoughts.

I do sell the tunable Remo version on my website, but I'm not here to be the pushy salesman. If you are interested, though, (ahem), please visit my profile page for the link to my site.

Now, back to the Kanjira. I find it fascinating that this is a drum that often has to be dampened (the lizard skin), in order to deepen the sound. I find that ironic, as it is usually the opposite problem for drums with natural heads, we are always seeking to tighten them up by the fire, out in the sun, or with a darn hair dryer. What are your experiences with the Kanjira?

Friends,
How many have been to a Jugalbandi concert? I attended my first one this summer in L.A. with THE KEDIA BROTHERS playing sitar and sarod. Jugalbandi is the unusual art of multiple voices blended into an interactive ensemble format. It was AMAZING. The Kedia Brothers are such beautiful souls, so transparent and such consumate artists. They will return to the U.S. next year. Meanwhile:

I am hosting a fundraiser for THE SANGEET SCHOOL OF MUSIC, an evening of JUGALBANDI at a private residence in Altadena on Sept 5th with Partho Sarathy - Sarod, Paul Livingstone - Sitar and Abhijit Banerjee - Tabla. This trio of sitar, sarod and tabla is the first India/USA ensemble ofHindustani classical music to conduct an international tour. As disciples of the legendary 'godfather of world music' Pt. Ravi Shankar,Partho & Paul perform ragas in the tradition of the MaiharGharana. Abhijit Banerjee, one of India's leading tabla players, rounds out the ensemble.

Utilizing traditional forms, the ensemble performs their music with a contemporary neo-classical approach. Their unique presentation incorporates subtle touches of counterpoint and harmony in the compositions and improvisations while maintaining the integrity and depth of the Indian raga forms. From serene meditations to virtuoso flights of improvisation and rhythmic dynamism these artists express music from the heart in the moment.
Commenting on his work Sherpa says, ”The strict tradition of Thangka painting teaches one how to view oneself as a channel through which all the deities manifest. There’s room for self-expression in Thangka painting but the actual practice is to eliminate the self clinging to ego.” ¬

The visual arts component of the Festival has expanded substantially with the all-day Thangka demonstration as well as a entire gallery devoted to a show by Fairfax-based Nepali contemporary painter, Sunila Bajracharya. Attendees will be able to meet Bajracharya at the Festival where she will be on hand to answer questions and discuss her work.

Event attendees are welcome to create their own art in the Prayer Flag making activity. There will also be kid-oriented activities and young children's toys available. There are also 3 playgrounds on our campus outside the event area.

For those of you who dont know what a mridanga is (not to be confused with the south indian mridangam) it is a double headed barrel shaped drum whose body is made from clay (mrid means clay and anga means parts or limbs). Through vedic musical history, there have been many versions of mridanga. This one found its current peculiarities in Bengal during the time of Sri Caitanya (a revolutionary avatar/saint of Bengal who was famous for Krsna Bhakti Kirtan). It's musical theory is developed around the theistic roots of Vedic thought, which culminates in Bhakti.

I have been living in India since '99 off and on studying Mridanga classically under my Guruji - Bablu Das Mahashay of Swarup Ganj, Nadia, West Bengal. I actually began playing when I was a very young boy as I was raised in the Krsna movement in USA. But I finally made it to begin studying properly in '99. I have performed and recorded with Krsna Das, Jai Uttal and many others without very big names.

I love this instrument and the immensely developed traditional culture of spiritual music theory which was compiled for it. The sampradayas (lineages) which I am studying in are known as Manoharshay and Garanhati. The former serves as the foundation for the latter and introduces all of the conventional tals (das pahira, tin, kaharwa, dadra, lofa, ek, kemta, das kushi, rupak/teora, jaap etc). The latter (garaanhati) brings us into drupad and many tals which start from 64 matras in length and go upto 196 matras/counts.

So if any of you would like to jam out or record or ?? write me

I've been doing this thing I'm calling "tabla poetry" for a little while now. What it is is putting English words to the rhythms of tabla compositions. Sometimes I have found it difficult to explain the concept to people who don't play Indian Classical music. Anyways I finally I made a video to show just what the heck I am talking about, and I thought that some of you might enjoy it.

First there is a simple gat and then an English poem set to the melody and rhythm of the gat. The tabla bol-s and English words can be found in my profile photo.

thanks to all that came out for filastine's performance last month - it was a truly inspiring set for a comfortably packed house. we will have some photos up soon on the roots and wires website...

this saturday, september 30th, we return with the ninth round of stateless, again at SF's amnesia. for our live act, we are excited to bring you the wailing junktet, performing brazillian rhythms on found junk objects... they were killer at the recent novo sounds event (at the supper club)...

our guest dj is vanka, who hosts the misturada event at club six. here's a blurb that xlr8r's tomas palermo wrote about him:

"DJ Vanka has tapped into a vibe that clubs like Bar Rhumba in London have been promoting for years: organic and electronic Afro-Latin dance music. Vanka's hardly late to the game, though; he DJed for 10 years with Stellar Trax soundsystem, playing everything from reggae to drum 'n' bass. Now the Belgian native focuses his energies on the Worldwide crew (which includes DJs Wisdom and Ruben) and makes sure the Make-Out Room is packed with dancers every Saturday for Misturada (Portuguese for "mixed"). As Vanka works his way through a mix of salsa, samba, reggaeton, cumbia, Latin house, and Brazilian batucada breaks, the place becomes a sweatbox of swirling bodies"

wicked!

resident dj, the worker (six degrees, stateless), will drop his usual dancefloor magic, with everything from baile funk to ragga breaks.

the roots and wires hi-fi will close out the night, in full soundsystem style - with both original productions and the thickest selections, from dubstep and ragga-jungle, old school bollywood and asian massive, to uk steppers and roots reggae... their performance will be dubbed live with analogue delays, siren and sound units, melodica and more...

finally, the stateless crew will tag-team and provide visual mixing to complete the multimedia mandala...

Please join us this Friday, August 25th, at Amnesia, for the next round of Stateless! Grey Filastine will be headlining, performing music from his new album - featuring a wicked mix of field recordings, sound collage, hip hop, arabic and indian beats. Here's the Boomkat review of his new album "Burn It," released on DJ Rupture's Soot Records:

"Thankfully this hugely accomplished debut album from Filastine on DJ Rupture’s Soot label is one that will stay on your playlist without fear of deletion. Taking influence from the four corners of the world; blending Brazillian funk with Jamaican riddims, Indian vocal honey with French rapping… this is a veritable world cruise (albeit without the pub-singer crooning). Filastine manages to distill his worldly influences without coming across trite or contrived. Never while listening to ‘Burn It’ did I stop and get cynical, it’s just not that kind of record. An excellent achievement and a huge recommendation – don’t burn it, BUY IT."

and another review from Seattle's Stranger:

"reminiscent of the murky drama of Ninja Tuners like Amon Tobin and DJ Food - throughout the album the lines between live performed contributions and meticulously contextualized samples is slurred and burnt... it feels like a thrillingly tense interaction between these ideological factors and the gold-toothed, whip-riding luxury of hiphop culture"

Grey will be joined by a guest vocalist, will be playing live polyrhythms, and will dub out his set via his performance art aesthetic (Grey is the conceptual mind behind Seattle's infamous Infernal Noise Brigade). Don't be surprised when you see his gear loaded on a shopping cart, a critique on consumerism and hypercapitalism...

In addition to Filastine, we have a special guest opening the night:

DJ Cyan will drop soulful sounds, liquid funk, drum and bass and dubstep...

The Worker, co-founder of Stateless alongside the Special Agent K, will follow DJ Cyan and drop ragga breaks, deep international techno, adding slivers of dub, brazilian, drum and bass, and breaks...

Filastine will play next...

The Roots and Wires Hi-Fi (Special Agent K, Andy G) will be closing the night with some original productions: expect some roots/dub, dubstep, and drum and bass meets virtuosic classical indian music (including All-India Radio artist, Ghanshyam Sisodia (sarangi), top disciple of Ustaad Amjad Ali Khan, Preetam Ghosal (sarod), and classical vocal virtuoso, Ujwaal Nagar). These sonic ninjas will also select the thickest in UK steppers, ragga jungle, asian massive, and roots/dub, all while dubbing the mix live with delays, reverb, siren unit, melodica, and video imagery! As a special treat, we will also be featuring tracks from Talvin Singh's upcoming album. This is so fresh that we can't give you any more details - I can say that you won't find this dubplate material anywhere else until next year. It is simply beautiful music, so please come and take any early sneak peek!

The Special Agent K will be doing live video mixing throughout the night, creating a rootsical container for your sonic experience...

This should be a night of edgy, experimental but danceable, outernational music and image...

We hope to see you all at Amnesia (853 Valencia, between 19th and 20th) this Friday, August 25th starting at 9PM. The cover is only $5 and the night goes until 2 AM...

India shehnai maestro dies at 91

Legendary musician Ustad Bismillah Khan,
India's best known shehnai player, has died aged 91

He suffered a heart attack in hospital in his home city of Varanasi early on Monday, his private secretary said.

Khan is credited with popularising shehnai, a wind instrument which can be loosely compared to an oboe, and elevating its status in India.

India's government has declared a day of national mourning. A state funeral is to be held later on Monday.

Jewel of India

Bismillah Khan was admitted to hospital last week after he complained of weakness.

A practising Muslim, he made the Hindu holy town of Varanasi (also known as Benares) his home and could often be seen playing by the banks of the holy river Ganges, offering prayers to the Hindu goddess of learning, Saraswati.

Khan often played shehnai in the local temples too.

He was seen as a symbol of India's religious pluralism and harmony for people of different faiths, and was awarded the country's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna (Jewel of India), in 2001.

A high point in his career was when he played shehnai at Delhi's Red Fort on the eve of India's Independence in 1947.

Born on 21 March, 1916, into a family of court musicians, Khan started training at the young age of six and was soon regarded as a master in his own right.

He was known for living a simple and austere life at his home in a narrow alleyway of Varanasi and cycle-rickshaw was his favourite mode of transport.

His body is being kept in a park in Varanasi to enable people to pay their last respects before his funeral.

Dear All

This Diwali which leads us into Truth and Light is celebrated on a
nation-wide scale on Naraka chathurthasi day just on the dawn of
Ammavaasa
during the Hindu month of Aippasi Month in Tamil
Language(Aaso/Aasvayuja/Asvina Months in Hindi
langauge)(September/October)
every year. It symbolises that age-old culture of our country which
teaches
us to vanquish ignorance that subdues humanity and to drive away
darkness
that engulfs the light of knowledge. Diwali, the festival of lights
even
to-day in this modern world projects the rich and glorious past of our
country and teaches us to uphold the true values of life.

The word "Diwali" is the corruption of the Sanskrit word "Deepavali" --
Deepa meaning light and Avali, meaning a row. It means a row of lights
and
indeed illumination forms its main attraction. Every home - lowly or
mightly
- the hut of the poor or the mansion of the rich - is alit with the
orange
glow of twinkling diyas-small earthen lamps - to welcome Lakshmi,
Goddess of
wealth and prosperity. Multi-coloured Rangoli (the design of the
background
of this page is of rangoli, also people drawn with rice flour on the
grounds
into their house, rangoli)designs, floral decorations and fireworks
lend
picturesness and grandeur to this festival which heralds joy, mirth and
happiness in the ensuring year.

This festival is celebrated on a grand scale in almost all the regions
of
India and is looked upon mainly as the beginning of New Year. As such
the
blessings of Lakshmi, the celestial consort of Lord Vishnu are invoked
with
prayers. Even countries like Kenya, Thailand, Trinidad, Siam and Malaya
celebrate this festival but in their own ways.

This Diwali festival, it is surmised dates back to that period when
perhaps
history was not written, and in its progress through centuries it
lighted
path of thousands to attain the ultimate good and complete ecstasy.

Diwali or more aptly Deepavali is very enthusiastically celebrated for
five
continuous days and each day has its significance with a number of
myths,
legends and beliefs.

The First day is called DHANTERAS or DHANTRAYODASHI which falls on the
thirteenth day of the month of Kartik . The word "Dhan" means wealth.
As
such this day of the five-day Diwali festival has a great importance
for the
rich mercantile community of Western India. Houses and Business
premises are
renovated and decorated. Entrances are made colourful with lovely
traditional motifs of Rangoli designs to welcome the Goddess of wealth
and
prosperity. To indicate her long-awaited arrival, small footprints are
drawn
with rice flour and vermilion powder all over the houses. Lamps are
kept
burning all through the nights. Believing this day to be auspicious
women
purchase some gold or silver or at least one or two new utensils.
"Lakshmi-Puja" is performed in the evenings when tiny diyas of clay are
lighted to drive away the shadows of evil spirits. "Bhajans"-devotional
songs- in praise of Goddess Laxmi are sung and "Naivedya" of
traditional
sweets is offered to the Goddess. There is a peculiar custom in
Maharashtra
to lightly pound dry coriander seeds with jaggery and offer as
Naivedya.

In villages cattles are adorned and worshipped by farmers as they form
the
main source of their income. In south cows are offered special
veneration as
they are supposed to be the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi and
therefore
they are adorned and worshipped on this day.

A very interesting story about this day is of the sixteen year old son
of
King Hima. As per his horoscope he was doomed to die by a snake-bite on
the
fourth day of his marriage. On that particular fourth day of his
marriage
his young wife did not allow him to sleep. She laid all the ornaments
and
lots of gold and silver coins in a big heap at the entrance of her
husband's
boudoir and lighted innumerable lamps all over the place. And she went
on
telling stories and singing songs. When Yam, the god of Death arrived
there
in the guise of a Serpent his eyes got blinded by that dazzle of those
brilliant lights and he could not enter the Prince's chamber. So he
climbed
on top of the heap of the ornaments and coins and sat there whole night
listening to the melodious songs. In the morning he quietly went away.

Thus the young wife saved her husband from the clutches of death. Since
then
this day of Dhanteras came to be known as the day of "YAMADEEPDAAN" and
lamps are kept burning throughout the night in reverential adoration to
Yam,
the god of Death.

Another ancient story of how Diwali evolved into such a widely
celebrated
festival is different in various regions and states of India. In the
north,
particularly in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar and the
surrounding
areas, Diwali is the day when King Rama's coronation was celebrated in
Ayodhya after his epic war with Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. By
order of
the royal families of Ayodhya and Mithila, the kingdom of which Sita
was
princess, the cities and far-flung boundaries of these kingdoms were
lit up
with rows of lamps, glittering on dark nights to welcome home the
divine
king Rama and his queen Sita after 14 years of exile, ending with an
across-the-seas war in which the whole of the kingdom of Lanka was
destroyed.

The SECOND day is called NARKA-CHATURDASHI or CHOTI DIWAL which falls
on the
fourteenth day of the month of Kartik. The story goes that the demon
king
Narakasur ruler of Pragjyotishpur ( a province to the South of Nepal)
after
defeating Lord Indra had snatched away the magnificent earrings of
Aditi,
the Mother Goddess and imprisoned sixteen thousand daughters of the
gods and
saints in his harem. On the day previous to Narakachaturdashi, Lord
Krishna
killed the demon and liberated the imprisoned damsels and also
recovered
those precious earrings of Aditi. As a symbol of that victory Lord
Krishna
smeared his forehead with the demon king's blood. Krishna returned home
in
the very early morning of the Narakachaturdashi day. The womenfolk
massaged
scented oil to his body and gave him a good bath to wash away the filth
from
his body. Since then the custom of taking bath before sunrise on this
day
has become a traditional practice specially in Maharashtra.

In South India that victory of the divine over the mundane is
celebrated in
a very peculiar way. People wake up before sunrise prepare blood by
mixing
Kumkum in oil and after breaking a bitter fruit that represents the
head of
the demon King that was smashed by Krishna, apply that mixture on their
foreheads. Then they have an oil bath using sandalwood paste.

In Maharashtra also, traditional early baths with oil and "Uptan"
(paste) of
gram flour and fragrant powders are a `must'. All through the ritual of
baths, deafening sounds of crackers and fireworks are there in order
that
the children enjoy bathing. Afterwards steamed vermiceli with milk and
sugar
or puffed rice with curd is served.

Another legend is about King Bali of the nether world mighty power had
become a threat to the gods. In order to curb his powers Lord Vishnu in
the
guise of a Batu Waman- a small boy- visited him and begged him to give
him
only that much land which he could cover with his three steps. Known
for his
philanthropy King Bali proudly granted him his wish. That very moment
that
small boy transformed himself into the all-powerful Lord Vishnu. With
his
first step Lord Vishnu covered the entire heaven and with the second
step
the earth and asked Bali where to keep his third step. Bali offered his
head. Putting his foot on his head Vishnu pushed him down to the
underworld.
At the same time for his generosity Lord Vishnu gave him the lamp of
knowledge and allowed him to return to earth once a year to light
millions
of lamps to dispel the darkness and ignorance and spread the radiance
of
love and wisdom.

This Narakachaturdashi day therefore is dedicated to lights and prayers
heralding a future full of joy and laughter.

The THIRD day of the festival of Diwali is the most important day of
LAKSHMI-PUJA which is entirely devoted to the propitiation of Goddess
Lakshmi. This day is also known by the name of "CHOPADA-PUJA". On this
very
day sun enters his second course and passes Libra which is represented
by
the balance or scale. Hence, this design of Libra is believed to have
suggested the balancing of account books and their closing. Despite the
fact
that this day falls on an amavasya day it is regarded as the most
auspicious. On this day of the Hindi month of Kartik the Goddess of
wealth
and prosperity, Lakshmi was incarnated. She appeared during the
churning of
the ocean, which is known as 'Samudra Manthan', by the demons on one
side
and 'Devataas' on the other side. Therefore the worship of Goddess
Lakshmi,
the Lakshmi Pujan, on the day of Divali became a tradition.

Hence ,The day of Lakshmi-Puja falls on the dark night of Amavasya. The
strains of joyous sounds of bells and drums float from the temples as
man is
invoking Goddess Lakshmi in a wondrous holy "pouring-in" of his heart.
All
of a sudden that impenetrable darkness is pierced by innumerable rays
of
light for just a moment and the next moment a blaze of light descends
down
to earth from heaven as golden-footed Deep-Lakshmi alights on earth in
all
her celestial glory amidst chantings of Vedic hymns. A living luminance
of
Universal Motherhood envelopes the entire world in that blessed moment
of
fulfillment of a long-awaited dream of the mortal. A sublime light of
knowledge dawns upon humanity and devotion of man finally conquers
ignorance. This self enlightenment is expressed through the twinkling
lamps
that illuminate the palaces of the wealthy as well as the lowly abodes
of
the poor. It is believed that on this day Lakshmi walks through the
green
fields and loiters through the bye-lanes and showers her blessings on
man
for plenty and prosperity. When the sun sets in the evening and
ceremonial
worship is finished all the home-made sweets are offered to the goddess
as
"NAIVEDYA" and distributed as "PRASAD". Feasts are arranged and gifts
are
exchanged on this day gaily dressed men, women and children go to
temples
and fairs, visit friends and relatives. Everything is gay, gold and
glitter!

One of the most curious customs which characterises this festival of
Diwali
is the indulgence of gambling, specially on a large scale in North
India. It
is believed that goddess Parvati played dice with her husband, Lord
Shiv on
this day and she decreed that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would
prosper throughout the ensuring year. This tradition of playing cards-
flush
and rummy with stakes on this particular day continues even to-day.

On this auspicious day Lord Shri Krishna around whom revolved the
entire
story of our great epic Mahabharat and the philosopher, who preached
Karmayog through his Geeta to Arjun on the battlefield of Kurukshetra,
discarded his body.

Bhagwan, Mahavir, the Jain prophet also attained "Nirvan" on this day.

Swami Ramtirth, the beloved "Ram Badshah" of millions of Indians was
not
only born on this day and took "Sanyas" but also took "Samadhi" on this
day.

Swami Dayanand Saraswati, founder of Arya Samaj in 1875 in Mumbai, with
his
superb yogic powers greed his soul from his body and mingled with
divinity
on this auspicious day of Diwali.

We kindle innumerable lights on this day to immortalise the sacred
memories
of those great men who lived to brighten the lives of millions of their
fellow beings.

One very interesting story about this Diwali day is from Kathopanishad
of a
small boy called Nichiketa who believed that Yam, the god of Death was
as
black as the dark night of amavasya. But when he met Yam in person he
was
puzzled seeing Yam's calm countenance and dignified stature. Yam
explained
to Nichiketa on this Diwali day of amavasya that by only passing
through the
darkness of death, man sees the light of highest wisdom and then only
his
soul can escape from the bondage of his mortal frame to mingle with the
Supreme Power without whose will not an at ton moves in the world. And
then
Nichiketa realised the importance of worldly life and significance of
death.
Nichiketa's all doubts were set at rest and he whole-heartedly
participated
in Diwali celebrations.

The FOURTH day is PADWA or VARSHAPRATIPADA which marks the coronation
of
King Vikramaditya and Vikaram-Samvat was started from this Padwa day.

Govardhan-Puja is also performed in the North on this day. As per
Vishnu-Puran the people of Gokul used to celebrate a festival in honour
of
Lord Indira and worshipped him after the end of every monsoon season
but one
particular year the young Krishna stopped them from offering prayers to
Lord
Indra who in terrific anger sent a deluge to submerge Gokul. But
Krishna
saved his Gokul by lifting up the Govardhan mountain and holding it
over the
people as an umbrella.

Govardhan is a small hillock in Braj, near Mathura and on this day of
Diwali
people of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar build cowdung,
hillocks,
decorate them with flowers and then worship them.

This day is also observed as Annakoot meaning mountain of food. In
temples
specially in Mathura and Nathadwara, the deities are given milkbath,
dressed
in shining attires with ornaments of dazzling diamonds, pearls, rubies
and
other precious stones. After the prayers and traditional worship
innumerable
varieties of delicious sweets are ceremoniously raised in the form of a
mountain before the deities as "Bhog" and then the devotees approach
the
Mountain of Food and take Prasad from it.

Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped in every Hindu household and her
blessings
sought for success and happiness. This day is looked upon as the most
auspicious day to start any new venture. In many Hindu homes it is a
custom
for the wife to put the red tilak on the forehead of her husband,
garland
him and do his "Aarathi" with a prayer for his long life. In
appreciation of
all the tender care that the wife showers on him, the husband gives her
a
costly gift. This Gudi Padwa is symbolic of love and devotion between
the
wife and husband. On this day newly-married daughters with their
husbands
are invited for special meals and given presents. In olden days
brothers
went to fetch their sisters from their in-laws home for this important
day.

The FIFTH and final day of Diwali Festival is known by the name of
"BHAYYA-DUJ" in the Hindi-speaking belt "BHAV-BIJ" in the
Marathi-speaking
communities and in Nepal by the name of "BHAI-TIKA". As the legend goes
Yamraj, the God of Death visited his sister Yami on this particular
day. She
put the auspicious tilak on his forehead, garlanded him and led him
with
special dishes and both of them together ate the sweets, talked and
enjoyed
themselves to their heart's content, while parting Yamraj gave her a
special
gift as a token of his love and in return Yami also gave him a lovely
gift
which she had made with her own hands. That day Yamraj announced that
anyone
who receives tilak from his sister will never be thrown. That is why
this
day of Bhayyaduj is also known by the name of "YAMA-DWITIYA" Since then
this
day is being observed as a symbol of love between sisters and brothers.
It
became also imperative for the brother to go to his sister's house to
celebrate Bhayyaduj.

In today's world when pressing everyday problems are teaming as under
all
the tender words of personal relationships, the celebrating of this day
has
its own importance in continuing to maintain the love between brothers
and
sisters for it is the day of food-sharing, gift-giving and reaching out
to
the inner most depths of the hearts.

Diwali on the whole has always been the festival with more social than
religious connotations. It is a personal, people-oriented festival when
enmities are forgotten, families and friends meet, enjoy and establish
a
word of closeness.

As a festival of light and beauty it encourages artistic expressions
through
home-decorations stage-plays, elocution competitions singing and
dancing
programmes, making gift items and making delectable sweets thereby
discovering new talents of younger people. As a result innumerable
communities with varying cultures and customs mingle together to make
Diwali
celebrations a very happy occasion for all.

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore has so aptly put forth the true
significance of
Diwali in these beautiful lines:

The night is black Kindle the lamp of LOVE With thy life and devotion.

May God Bless you all.

Devotional Music, Delectable meals and Divine Feminine Archetypes

Saturday, July 16th:
Classical North Indian Ragas and folk music by living masters Pandit Shivnath and Deborat Mishra (www.music-of-benares.com).

India’s acclaimed father-son sitar duo, The Mishras are coming to Portland as part of their 2005 summer tour. These seasoned musicians have been sharing the magic and joy of their musical musings for over twenty years throughout India, Europe, Canada and the US, to critical and award winning acclaim. The ensemble for their tour includes renowned tabla player, Marco Zonka of Seattle.

Please join us for an evening that will transport the listener on a river of music. A musical dialogue spanning centuries, this deeply evocative music is as vibrant and alive in these living hands as it was in the hands of the ancient masters.

Thank you for coming out to Worldly III – it is going to be incredible!

In order to streamline the process of getting you into 1015 Folsom I have created the printable pdf that is attached.

The Ticket
http://www.dhamaalsf.com/Worldly/Volume3/May1015Ticket.pdf

The Flash Flyer
http://dhamaalsf.com/flyers/worldly3/worldly03Flyer.htm

1. Print it out and bring it the event
2. Show it to the 1015 Folsom Box Office Staff for 15$ Entrance
3. Important: Each person that wants to get on the 15$ List must have a printout
4. You can forward this email to friends so they can make a print out too

The link also has information about the space, performances and where each room is – 1015 Folsom is a big club and having a copy of the attachment to look at will be useful (make an extra copy though since you will have to surrender one copy to get the $15 discount entrance).

Last year we passed some incredible milestones - things that we would have have never envisaged when we started throwing events at 111 Minna in 1999 amidst the transitory glow of the dotcom boom. With the release of our second original music EP 'Transitions' front and center we continue to evolve our sound through each performance.

Last year was exemplified by Janaka's exclamation to Maneesh and Dhruva - 'Can you believe that Dr. Das of Asian Dub Foundation is playing on our tracks!'

Can you believe that we plan to take things further this year than any year before?

Join in this Saturday @ Club Six where we will be performing original songs, dropping unreleased Dhamaal remixes of Asian Dub Foundation's new album, slamming dance music performed by world class DJs, cutting edge live video mixes, live Classical Indian and Pakistani folk music from artists representing a 500 year musical lineage and much more! Plus Special Guest Dub Gabriel.

I've heard and enjoyed Shujaat's playing on other more traditional classical recordings, but this combination of sitar and his rich, warm vocals, is really gorgeous.

Bhagwat-Gita which is one of the most revered book on Bhakti-yoga is a part of the bigger epic "Mahabharata". Bhagwat Gita begins with Arjuna, the warrior, raising doubts about the need to fight the Kurukshetra war (the war being metaphor of life) when it seemed so meaningless especially when all he loved was in danger of being distroyed in it (again the metaphor is the consumption of ego). This was the moment when Arjuna was not able to even lift his bow, and he pleads Krishna as to why he needs to continue fighting this war, why should he just not give up. He is in deep despair and disappointed at all this drumming up to this war.

Pandit Kumar Gandharva has sung this very emotion in a Bhajan which I'll translate for you. The audio link is provided for you to enjoy. "Visada-Yoga" is definitely one color of Bhakti-yoga where doubts are raised to a point where even breathing becomes difficult.

Here is a link to the Bhajan

www.musicindiaonline.com/music...1000903

click on the first Bhajan "Aeso Kaiso Aayo" and press the buttom at the bottom of the page to listen.

________________________________________________

Aeso Kaiso Aayo Prit re?
Now what is the meaning of you coming like that?

This line literally is a question which almost sounds like a complaint. The question is addressed to "the beloved" and the beloved is symbolized by the "Rainy season" in this Bhajan.

Ambwa pe more na aayo
When there is no peacock on the mango tree.

Karu na Gunjar Bhanwra re
And the bees are not buzzing around

Pir Barhyo re Koyal ki
And the pain of the Robin bird has only increased

Rang na khilo hai phulwa re
and the blooming flowers are without color

----------------------------------------------------------

Interestingly Panditji has sung it in Raag Basant Bahar, which is a raaga of restless creativity of nature. I hope you enjoy it.
